Stephen King News
Stephen King has announced two new books for this year.
The Outsider
An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively readable stories.
An eleven-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City’s most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.
As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King’s propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.
The Outsider will be available in stores and online on May 22nd, 2018.
Elevation
The latest from legendary master storyteller Stephen King, a riveting, extraordinarily eerie, and moving story about a man whose mysterious affliction brings a small town together—a timely, upbeat tale about finding common ground despite deep-rooted differences.
Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis.
In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade—but escalating—battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice. Both are trying to launch a new restaurant, but the people of Castle Rock want no part of a gay married couple, and the place is in trouble. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face – including his own -- he tries to help. Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott’s affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others.
From Stephen King, our “most precious renewable resource, like Shakespeare in the malleability of his work” (The Guardian), Elevation is an antidote to our divisive culture, as gloriously joyful(with a twinge of deep sadness) as “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
Elevation will be available in stores and online on October 30th, 2018.

LOST AND LONELY by Brian James Freeman
LOST AND LONELY by Brian James Freeman, Cemetery Dance, $35, 9781587675683.
Everything you need to know about Brian James Freeman can be found in this book. He has a way with words. His writing has that impact you feel when you are truly bothered by terrors unexpected. He has that subtle smooth touch that you feel just before you feel the razor sharp fingernails. And, he is a great writer.
In this five storied tome, there are differing ways to frighten and horrify you. The theme in each story has to do with the value of family. The wife and son of a bestselling author go missing, but he hears footsteps in the hall. Patty has made some mistakes, but she is sure Roger will take her back after he sees how far she will go to make things right. A father moves his Colonial family into the wilderness to escape a monster that is stalking the new colony. Teenage Melissa has just told her boyfriend that she is pregnant. A 911 dispatcher receives a troubling call from a new mother.
Each story features an illustration by Glenn Chadbourne that fits perfectly with the story. Each tale is a subtle touch that will claw its' way into your memory. That's what you need to know about Brian James Freeman. Remember that all these stories are about family and one can only hope that it's not your family.

Random Ramblings; Or, I think I lost my mind and it was two quarts low when I got it back.
These are just some ramblings that hit me when I can't get out of the way fast enough. Some of them may make sense but most probably won't.
Ray Thomas of the newly elected Rock'N'Roll Hall of Fame Moody Blues, died recently. After I received the news, I set my MP3 player toggle to shuffle on the Moody Blues and the first three songs played were sung by Ray.

Baen Books for February
First out of the jiffy bag is MONSTER HUNTER MEMOIRS: SINNERS by Larry Correia and John Ringo, $7.99 Baen, 9781481482875. This sends Chad Oliver Gardenier to New Orleans to take on the latest crop of loup garoueaux, fifty foot upright walking crocodiles and more voodoo spells than the law allows. Since Chad is a bounty hunter, he has to stay alive in order to collect his money.
Wen Spencer was such a voracious reader when he was younger that he ran out of things to read and starting to create his own stories and eventually, he wrote them down. PROJECT ELFHOME, $7.99, Baen, 9781481482905, collects all of his stories into one volume for all of his friends and readers to have in one volume. This is not the Pittsburgh we know. It is a confluence of four worlds meeting and overlapping in Elfhome. And as they are known to say, no one will ever be the same.
The late Poul Anderson was one of the creators of the space opera that I grew up with. Nicholas Van Rijn, Dominic Flandry, The Psychotechnic League, and others are continuing to meet fresh eyes thanks to Baen Books. THE COMPLETE PSYCHOTECHNIC LEAGUE, VOLUME 2, Baen, $10, 9781481483063 is the latest addition to the reprinting of nine fabulous stories. This volume includes the hard to find "The Snows of Ganymede". The Institute has put an end to war and peace covers the globe and the galaxy is the next stop. War will raise its ugly head in a way that shows Poul Anderson at his best.
For those fans of alternate history, you will be pleased to know that 1637: THE VOLGA RULES by Eric Flint, Paula Goodlett, and Gorg Huff is now available. The Russian serfs want to follow the idea that all men are created equal and practiced by the "up-timers" from Grantville. This will be a tough time for the serfs and the czar as liberty tries to make an entry 300 years ahead of schedule. Grab this one in order to see how the writers handle this situation. Baen, $25, 9781481483032.
The other releases are: MISSION TO METHONE by Les Johnson, $16, 9781481483056 and BRINGERS OF HELL by Travis S. Taylor, $23,9781481483049.
Remember great books come from Baen!

TO CATCH A KILLER by Sheryl Scarborough
TO CATCH A KILLER by Sheryl Scarborough
“A twisty, cold-case mystery custom made for fans of Sara Shepard, PLL and Veronica Mars! The edge-of-your-seat plot, sinister backstory and smart, brave and irreverent main character made this whodunit unputdownable.”—Justine Magazine
In To Catch a Killer, a contemporary mystery by debut author Sheryl Scarborough, a teenage girl uses forensic science to solve the cold-case murder of her mother. Erin Blake has one of those names. A name that is inextricably linked to a grisly crime. As a toddler, Erin survived for three days alongside the corpse of her murdered mother, and the case—which remains unsolved—fascinated a nation. Her father's identity unknown, Erin was taken in by her mother's best friend and has become a relatively normal teen in spite of the looming questions about her past.
fourteen years later, Erin is once again at the center of a brutal homicide when she finds the body of her biology teacher. When questioned by the police, Erin tells almost the whole truth, but never voices her suspicions that her mother's killer has struck again in order to protect the casework she's secretly doing on her own.
Inspired by her uncle, an FBI agent, Erin has ramped up her forensic hobby into a full-blown cold-case investigation. This new murder makes her certain she's close to the truth, but when all the evidence starts to point the authorities straight to Erin, she turns to her longtime crush (and fellow suspect) Journey Michaels to help her crack the case before it's too late.
“Scarborough has written an intense, engrossing debut. Readers will root for Erin to find answers, laugh at her friends’ antics as they play detective, and struggle to identify the killer in a plot full of red herrings and multiple suspects. This solid mystery will easily grab the attention of fans of the genre.”—Booklist
“To Catch a Killer is a tense, storming heartbeat of a thriller. Scarborough’s tightly woven story merges forensic intrigue with friendship, romance, and family, nailing the dynamic stylings of Veronica Mars and the playful spirit of Bones. I could not put it down.”—Cori McCarthy, author of Breaking Sky
"The fast-paced plot and Veronica Mars-esque protagonist make this book a good fit for avid mystery readers."—School Library Journal
"Scarborough brings Erin to life as a teenager with a damaged past...there are enough red herrings and forensic activity to keep everyone entertained all the way through the climatic end."—VOYA
“A relatable cast and well thought-out plot make this mystery a Sherlockian puzzle sure to impress the most hardened crime-procedural fanatic. Don your deer-stalker caps, gumshoes, you’re in for a twisty ride.”—Mary Elizabeth Summer, author of Trust Me, I’m Lying
SHERYL SCARBOROUGH worked as a writer, story editor, and series developer in children's television before receiving her MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adult from Vermont College, where she studied under Rita Williams-Garcia, Tom Birdseye, Susan Fletcher, and A.M. Jenkins, among others. She lives and works in Kalama, Washington. To Catch a Killer is her debut.

1972: A NOVEL OF IRELAND’S UNFINISHED REVOLUTION by Morgan Llywelyn
1972: A NOVEL OF IRELAND’S UNFINISHED REVOLUTION by Morgan Llywelyn
The Irish Century series is the narrative of the epic struggle of the Irish people for independence through the tumultuous twentieth century. Morgan Llywelyn's magisterial multi-novel chronicle of that story began with 1916, continued in 1921 and 1949, and now continues with 1972.
1972 tells the story of Ireland from 1950–1972 as seen through the eyes of young Barry Halloran, son and grandson of Irish revolutionaries. Following family tradition, at eighteen Barry joins the Irish Republican Army to help complete what he sees as 'the unfinished revolution'.
Issues are no longer as clear cut as they once were. His first experience of violence in Northern Ireland shocks and disturbs him, yet he has found a sense of family in the Army which is hard to give up. He makes a partial break by becoming a photographer, visually documenting events in the north rather than participating.
Events lead Barry into a totally different life from the one he expected, yet his allegiance to the ideal of a thirty-two county Irish republic remains undimmed as the problems, and the violence, of Northern Ireland escalate. Then Barry finds himself in the middle of the most horrific event of all: Bloody Sunday in Derry, 1972.
“1972 is a new genre for Morgan. Usually she investigates history, but this time she witnessed and recorded it. Her passion for her subject matter, tempered with restraint, is what makes 1972 such a great read.” —Joyce Curran Cannon
“Llywelyn is an astute observer of matters Irish, and understands the passions that move the actors. 1972’s ending is as tragic and inevitable as a tombstone, and as memorable as Swift’s quip: The Irish have religion enough to hate, but not enough to love.” —Richmond-Times Dispatch
Since 1980, MORGAN LLYWELYN has created an entire body of work chronicling the Celts and Ireland, from the earliest times to the present day. Her critically acclaimed novels, both of history and of mythology, have been translated into many languages. She is an Irish citizen and lives in Dublin.

TOMORROW’S KIN by Nancy Kress
TOMORROW’S KIN by Nancy Kress
Tomorrow's Kin is the first volume in a hard science fiction trilogy by Nancy Kress based on the Nebula Award-winning Yesterday's Kin.
The aliens have arrived...they've landed their Embassy ship on a platform in New York Harbor, and will only speak with the United Nations. They say that their world is so different from Earth, in terms of gravity and atmosphere, that they cannot leave their ship. The population of Earth has erupted in fear and speculation.
One day Dr. Marianne Jenner, an obscure scientist working with the human genome, receives an invitation that she cannot refuse. The Secret Service arrives at her college to escort her to New York, for she has been invited, along with the Secretary General of the UN and a few other ambassadors, to visit the alien Embassy.
The truth is about to be revealed. Earth’s most elite scientists have ten months to prevent a disaster—and not everyone is willing to wait.
Washington Post Best New Science Fiction for Summer
“Kress mixes contemporary issues of isolationism and refugee status with classic SF first-contact tropes, threaded neatly with solid scientific theory and speculation.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“A solid, riveting and fast-paced tale.”—RT Book Reviews (5 stars out of 5)
“Kress has proven that she can pack a huge amount of story into a small container, and here the author expertly explores one family’s experience of alien visitation.”—Library Journal
“Tomorrow’s Kin’s begins in a way that readers of her earlier writing and Sir Arthur C Clarke’s Childhood’s End will recognize—the arrival to Earth of aliens—but then, like the best of Clarke, transcends from this to something new and contemporary.”—SFF World

AMBERLOUGH by Lara Elena Donnelly
A double-agent sacrifices all his ideals in order to save his smuggler lover before a government coup takes over their decadent city in Lara Elena Donnelly’s glam spy thriller debut
In Amberlough, amidst rising political tensions, three lives become intertwined with the fate of the city itself.
The Smuggler: By day, Aristide Makricosta is the emcee for Amberlough City’s top nightclub. By night, he moves drugs and refugees under the noses of crooked cops.
The Spy: Covert agent Cyril DePaul thinks he’s good at keeping secrets, but after a disastrous mission abroad, he makes a dangerous choice to protect himself…and hopefully Aristide too.
The Dancer: Streetwise Cordelia Lehane, burlesque performer at the Bumble Bee Cabaret and Aristide’s runner, could be the key to Cyril’s plans―if she can be trusted.
As the twinkling marquees lights yield to the rising flames of a fascist revolution, these three will struggle to survive using whatever means―and people―necessary. Including each other.
“Donnelly’s striking debut brings a complex world of politics, espionage, and cabaret life to full vision.” —Library Journal, starred review, Debut of the Month
