Stephen King News
Stephen King has announced two new books for this year.
The Outsider
An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively readable stories.
An eleven-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City’s most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.
As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King’s propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.
The Outsider will be available in stores and online on May 22nd, 2018.
Elevation
The latest from legendary master storyteller Stephen King, a riveting, extraordinarily eerie, and moving story about a man whose mysterious affliction brings a small town together—a timely, upbeat tale about finding common ground despite deep-rooted differences.
Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis.
In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade—but escalating—battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice. Both are trying to launch a new restaurant, but the people of Castle Rock want no part of a gay married couple, and the place is in trouble. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face – including his own -- he tries to help. Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott’s affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others.
From Stephen King, our “most precious renewable resource, like Shakespeare in the malleability of his work” (The Guardian), Elevation is an antidote to our divisive culture, as gloriously joyful(with a twinge of deep sadness) as “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
Elevation will be available in stores and online on October 30th, 2018.

LOST AND LONELY by Brian James Freeman
LOST AND LONELY by Brian James Freeman, Cemetery Dance, $35, 9781587675683.
Everything you need to know about Brian James Freeman can be found in this book. He has a way with words. His writing has that impact you feel when you are truly bothered by terrors unexpected. He has that subtle smooth touch that you feel just before you feel the razor sharp fingernails. And, he is a great writer.
In this five storied tome, there are differing ways to frighten and horrify you. The theme in each story has to do with the value of family. The wife and son of a bestselling author go missing, but he hears footsteps in the hall. Patty has made some mistakes, but she is sure Roger will take her back after he sees how far she will go to make things right. A father moves his Colonial family into the wilderness to escape a monster that is stalking the new colony. Teenage Melissa has just told her boyfriend that she is pregnant. A 911 dispatcher receives a troubling call from a new mother.
Each story features an illustration by Glenn Chadbourne that fits perfectly with the story. Each tale is a subtle touch that will claw its' way into your memory. That's what you need to know about Brian James Freeman. Remember that all these stories are about family and one can only hope that it's not your family.

Random Ramblings; Or, I think I lost my mind and it was two quarts low when I got it back.
These are just some ramblings that hit me when I can't get out of the way fast enough. Some of them may make sense but most probably won't.
Ray Thomas of the newly elected Rock'N'Roll Hall of Fame Moody Blues, died recently. After I received the news, I set my MP3 player toggle to shuffle on the Moody Blues and the first three songs played were sung by Ray.
I realize that potato chips are sold by weight, but it is still weird to have less that half a bag of chips when you open them. Wouldn't it be cheaper to use smaller packaging and make us think we are getting more?
We all know that a group of baboons is called a congress, right?
Russia is banned from the Olympics, but the athletes are there; good!
I have an ear infection and the doctor prescribed eye drops! I guess I can't see well enough to hear.
Danish Wedding Cookies aren't Danish and don't always get served at weddings.
If you live in the United States of America, aren't you an American period?

Baen Books for February
First out of the jiffy bag is MONSTER HUNTER MEMOIRS: SINNERS by Larry Correia and John Ringo, $7.99 Baen, 9781481482875. This sends Chad Oliver Gardenier to New Orleans to take on the latest crop of loup garoueaux, fifty foot upright walking crocodiles and more voodoo spells than the law allows. Since Chad is a bounty hunter, he has to stay alive in order to collect his money.
Wen Spencer was such a voracious reader when he was younger that he ran out of things to read and starting to create his own stories and eventually, he wrote them down. PROJECT ELFHOME, $7.99, Baen, 9781481482905, collects all of his stories into one volume for all of his friends and readers to have in one volume. This is not the Pittsburgh we know. It is a confluence of four worlds meeting and overlapping in Elfhome. And as they are known to say, no one will ever be the same.
The late Poul Anderson was one of the creators of the space opera that I grew up with. Nicholas Van Rijn, Dominic Flandry, The Psychotechnic League, and others are continuing to meet fresh eyes thanks to Baen Books. THE COMPLETE PSYCHOTECHNIC LEAGUE, VOLUME 2, Baen, $10, 9781481483063 is the latest addition to the reprinting of nine fabulous stories. This volume includes the hard to find "The Snows of Ganymede". The Institute has put an end to war and peace covers the globe and the galaxy is the next stop. War will raise its ugly head in a way that shows Poul Anderson at his best.
For those fans of alternate history, you will be pleased to know that 1637: THE VOLGA RULES by Eric Flint, Paula Goodlett, and Gorg Huff is now available. The Russian serfs want to follow the idea that all men are created equal and practiced by the "up-timers" from Grantville. This will be a tough time for the serfs and the czar as liberty tries to make an entry 300 years ahead of schedule. Grab this one in order to see how the writers handle this situation. Baen, $25, 9781481483032.
The other releases are: MISSION TO METHONE by Les Johnson, $16, 9781481483056 and BRINGERS OF HELL by Travis S. Taylor, $23,9781481483049.
Remember great books come from Baen!
